There's a diesel heater for those chilly South Island nights and a top-notch ventilation system with a power fan and venting skylight for when things heat up. Basically, Kaewa handles New Zealand's moody weather like a champion, making her the perfect year-round travel companion.

The compact-but-stunning bathroom features a proper toilet and shower—luxury on wheels. No more campsite bathroom queues at 6am.

The layout is brilliant. The bed is spacious enough for two (or one very happy solo traveler), and there's a separate couch that stays a couch. No tedious daily bed-making required like so many other vans. Travelling with kids? The couch converts into a child-sized bed, so the whole family can create those epic memories together.

• Kaewa has a fixed toilet and meets the latest self-containment certification—freedom camping approved

• Auckland pickup: anytime Friday-Sunday, or after 5pm Monday-Thursday (with a half-day discount for weekday pickups)

• Minimum hire: 4 days (7 days in summer)

• Humans only—sorry, no pets
